3.85kW Solar Electric System
Innovative Power Systems installed this 3.85kW solar electric system in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2010. The owner of the system wanted to maximize the total solar potential of his roof and thus incorporated solar on three different roofs, “We have always been interested in renewable sources of energy and finding ways to reduce our impact on the environment. When we moved into our new home in Minneapolis, we immediately saw an opportunity to make a difference right above our heads. Our south facing roof was a perfect spot for a solar electric system and we immediately got to work researching our options. I understood the benefits of the 30% federal tax credit and discovered rebates that were even more attractive. It was becoming apparent that installing a solar electric system would not only be an excellent environmental decision but also a sound financial one as well. IPS expects this system to produce about 4,600kWh of electricity on average per year. Producing 4,600kWh of electricity annually from coal emits about 9,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. Preventing this much carbon dioxide from being released to the atmosphere is equivalent to adding 460 trees to our forests. Over a 30-year span, IPS expects this system will offset 270,000 pounds or 135 tons of carbon dioxide.
